I’m Michaella Magaard, an attorney here at Joye Law Firm. I work out of the Charleston office. I handle workers’ compensation and personal injury law.
People are not walking through our door with great news. Something unfortunate has taken place, whether it’s an injury in the workplace or some accident outside of work. They’ve been hurt. They have medical bills that are piling up. They have concerns about their income stream, and they have concerns about taking care of their family.
When asked what inspired her decision to become an attorney, Mickey explains that she was lead, “by a desire to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. My journey into the legal field was fueled by my commitment to advocacy. I approach each client with the attention and respect they deserve. Everyone deserves to be heard and have an active listener on their side. I emphasize the importance of understanding my client’s needs and responding accordingly.”
“The most satisfying part of my job is helping people. I find immense gratification in supporting those who need it most, and my goal is always to make a positive difference in my clients’ lives. Having a client leave happy is one of the best feelings.”
“Often people tend to forget that an individual’s perception is their truth. I urge fellow attorneys to put themselves in their client’s shoes and act with empathy and understanding. I emphasize the importance of listening and remaining open-minded.”
Mickey earned her bachelor’s degree from Hamline University, Minnesota’s oldest private university, and went on to receive her Juris Doctorate from the Charleston School of Law. She is an active member of the Charleston County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to pro bono work, logging over 150 hours during law school. Her dedication to academics and service was recognized when she graduated Cum Laude from her undergraduate studies.
Outside of the courtroom, Mickey is an avid reader, painter, and true crime enthusiast. She enjoys spending time with her dogs and exploring Charleston’s vibrant restaurant scene. Her passion for advocacy extends beyond her legal work—she was a youth ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in 2006, raising over a million dollars for children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Additionally, she took on the role of teaching criminal law to high school students as a part of her training at the Charleston School of Law.
