Every young adult who wishes to pursue a college education should have the ability to do so. At least that is what the attorneys at Joye Law Firm believe. For this reason – and because the costs of going to college are often much more than many families can bear on their own – every year we offer our Joye in the Community Scholarship to high school seniors in South Carolina who want to pursue a four-year college education.
About the Joye in the Community Scholarship Program
Kenny Harrell, managing partner of Joye Law Firm, explains what the Joye in the Community Scholarship Program is and why it was started. Watch the full YouTube video here. A transcript of the video is provided below:
The Joye in the Community Scholarship Program has been going on for nine years now. Every year, we give six $2,000 scholarships. Anyone who is graduating from a South Carolina high school is eligible to apply. We have had winners across the state because we have a statewide practice.
When we started it, we were inspired by a friend of mine who is an attorney in Charlotte. He had a similar scholarship program, and I remember being at a conference and listening to him talk about the winners of his scholarships, and how much they enjoyed the process of picking the winners and getting to meet the winners and the families.
I came back from that conference and spoke with Reese and Mark – and at that time Reese was still living – and said, “You know, that is something that we could do,” and they agreed. And so we started it.
It has been a blast. We have met so many great kids. A lot of those kids have stayed in touch with us over the years. We had one family that had two children who have received it, and we didn’t even realize it until they showed up for the scholarship winners’ dinner for the second time. We have really met a lot of nice people and it is something that we feel very strongly about continuing.
How to Apply for the 2016 Joye Law Firm Scholarship Program
For those high school students who want to apply for the 2016 Joye Law Firm Scholarship, see the Joye Scholarship Program page. Applicants must submit a completed application form, copies of their current high school transcripts, and a creative entry that warns of the dangers of drunk driving and/or distracted driving. The more creative the entry is, the better. Scholarship winners will be announced June 1.
