Self driving car on SC highway

Beaufort County has the 11th highest rate of car accidents among South Carolina’s 46 counties, according to AAA Carolinas, the Island Packet reports. While Beaufort was not among the five most “dangerous counties” in 2012, it is part of a region with a high number of automobile collisions.

AAA Carolinas reports that the county had 2,663 accidents, putting it in 11th place for car crashes among South Carolina’s counties based on miles traveled.

In the other categories, Beaufort County was rated:

  • 16th in fatal accidents (23 deaths).
  • 14th in crashes that caused injuries (1,215 people were injured).
  • 16th in fatal motorcycle collisions (3 deaths).

Overall, Beaufort had a low rate of accidents involving large trucks. The county’s 23 truck accidents made Beaufort the second-best area of the state with a ranking of 45.

Reaction to Rankings

The high number of car accidents in Beaufort County doesn’t surprise law enforcement. Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner understands it isn’t the easiest area to navigate. Sheriff Tanner said that distractions and driver inattention are the main culprits behind most collisions, and there are a large number of tourists who are unfamiliar with the roads.

Sheriff Tanner believes that Beaufort’s roads have improved and that there should be more progress for the county in the future.
