Super Lawyers Nomination Process
Super Lawyers acknowledges the nation’s leading attorneys, spanning various practice areas and firm sizes. They employ a unique process involving independent research and peer evaluations to identify qualified candidates. Final selections are made on an annual, state-by-state basis. The rigorous, multi-step process creates a credible, comprehensive, and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for consumers searching for legal counsel.
Step 1: Nominations
Attorneys cannot nominate themselves, and they are prohibited from campaigning. They enter the candidate pool through a managing partner survey, peer nominations, third-party feedback, and identification by the Super Lawyers research team.
Step 2: Independent Research
Super Lawyers evaluates candidates based on 12 indicators of professional achievement and peer recognition. These include:
- Verdicts/settlements
- Transactions
- Representative clients
- Experience
- Honors and awards
- Special licenses and certifications
- Position within the law firm
- Bar and or professional activity
- Pro bono and community service
- Scholarly lectures and writings
- Education and employment background
Step 3: Peer Evaluation
Candidates with the highest point totals from nominations and independent research serve on the Blue Ribbon Panel. Panel members evaluate others within their primary practice area.
Step 4: Final Selection
A representative number of attorneys from small, medium, and large firms are selected. Only 2.5% are named Rising Stars, while 5% are designated Super Lawyers. To be eligible for Rising Stars, a candidate much be either 40 years old or younger or in practice for 10 years or less.

Notable and Recent Verdicts and Settlements
Attorney Mark Joye’s legal acumen and dedication to his clients have resulted in numerous notable verdicts and settlements. Among these are:
- A $262.5 million verdict against Chrysler Corporation for the family of a child who was tragically killed after being ejected from a vehicle with a defective door latch. This decision led to the recall of the part, saving the lives of potential future victims. The jury award remains the largest personal injury verdict in South Carolina history.
- A $6 million verdict awarded by a jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina (Charleston Division) to an injured S.C. Department of Transportation worker.
- A $17 million award to the surviving family members of a young Canadian couple and their infant son, who tragically perished in a fiery crash on Interstate 95 near Florence, South Carolina.

Mark’s impact extends beyond individual cases.
