Congaree Bluegrass Festival
Located in Cayce, South Carolina, the Congaree Bluegrass Festival is a free event that is open to people of all ages across the state. The festival will feature top-notch bluegrass bands, a bounce house, and a bouncy obstacle course and playground for children. While alcohol beverages are not allowed on the premises, there will be a wide variety of food and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Souvenirs, like t-shirts and caps, will also be available for purchase.
Be advised that the festival is held outdoors, and will be held rain or shine.

South Carolina State Fair
The South Carolina State Fair, put on by the State Agricultural & Mechanical Society of South Carolina, is always a yearly hit. Scheduled to take place over nearly two weeks’ time this October, the State Fair will feature attractions such as delicious fair food (like elephant ears!), animals, rides, arts and crafts, flower shows, and agriculture and livestock. What’s more, there will also be plenty of live entertainment at this year’s fair, including the talents of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dustin Lynch, Alabama, Aloe Blacc, for King & Country, and Kirk Franklin.
Keep in mind that attending the South Carolina State Fair is something you can feel good about, too; part of every dollar earned goes towards creating scholarships for South Carolina students.

Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival, and Oktoberfest is coming to Columbia this October! If you love beer, German food, live music, and lederhosen, you can’t miss this fun cultural celebration. This year’s Columbia Oktoberfest event will be complete with authentic food, folk dancers, Bavarian dancers, life music, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and beers on tap from Widmer, Carolina Brewery, Becks, Conquest Brewery, and so much more. You can view the entire entertainment lineup online, as well as the menu and beer options.
While the event is certainly designed for adults (age 21 and over, please), there will also be myriad kid activities, too, including balloon artists, face painting, sweets and treats, a playground, and carnival games. Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun, or go with your friends and call a babysitter for the kiddos.

Fur Ball
Hosted by Pawmetto Lifeline, the Fur Ball Moonlight Gala is held to raise money for the organization, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal rescue organization. The organization is aimed at alleviating the homelessness crisis of the more than 16,000 pets in the Midlands, more than 10,000 of which are euthanized every year.
This year’s Fur Ball Moonlight Gala will feature a cocktail reception, auction, raffle, and seated dinner. Ball-goers can purchase an individual ticket, tickets for two or more, or a whole table. Those who become event sponsors will also be entitled to a number of other perks, including recognition in all printed materials, customized sponsorship plaque, and even complimentary limousine service (for top sponsors).

Ultimate Challenge Mud Run Night Ops
The 2016 Ultimate Challenge Mud Run is quickly approaching. Scheduled to take place this October, this ‘run’ is not for the faint of heart, as this is not your average 5K. To be sure, the course is an obstacle race, and not just any obstacle race; the course was designed by a former marine, and has 36 military-style obstacles spread out over 6.2 miles. In fact, according to the challenge’s website, racers should be prepared to sweat, bleed, and may even have to deal with broken bones.
All proceeds from the Ultimate Challenge Mud Run are donated to charities.

Golf Tournament and Silent Auction Party
Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter will be holding a golf tournament and silent auction party this October, 2016 in order to raise money to support the organization. The two day event begins with a (Sunday) night of food, a raffle, prizes, and a silent auction. The next day (Monday), the golf tournament will be held.
Tickets can be purchased to both the silent auction and the golf tournament as an individual or as a couple, but that each golf team must consist of four players. Keep in mind that the dress code for this event is business casual or cocktail attire.

Walk for Life + Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon, 10K, 5K
Breast cancer is a serious health concern for woman, taking tens of thousands of lives each year. To raise money for ultrasound and mammography treatments to combat breast cancer, the annual Walk for Life – sponsored by the Palmetto Health Foundation – will be partnering with the all new Famously Hot Pink Half. This walk or run can be raced or taken at one’s leisure, and 5K, 10K, and half marathon distances are all options.
Those who choose to do the half marathon will be graced with views of the Congaree River, Elmwood Park, and other areas of downtown. Not only is the race a great way to raise money for and awareness of breast cancer, it is also a fantastic way to spend the day with family or friends, get some exercise, and kick off the fall season.

Columbia Buddy Walk
The Buddy Walk is the premier advocacy event for down syndrome in the United States, and is also considered to be the world’s most widely recognized public awareness event for the condition. If you are ready to unite under a common cause and help to raise awareness about, and monetary donations for, down syndrome in South Carolina, you should participate in this year’s Columbia Buddy Walk. In addition to the walk, there will also be family-friendly entertainment, fun, and food.

Dracula: Ballet With a Bite
To celebrate the season of haunting this October, why not purchase tickets to Dracula: Ballet with a Bite? Performed by Columbia City Ballet and based on the Bram Stoker’s famous novel, this production is considered a must-see. Not only will the ballet feature the dance performance – complete with death, fangs, and blood – but there will also be a costume contest during the Saturday performances. While this production is family friendly, you may want to consider leaving young children at home.

Pumpkin Run
The Pumpkin Run is a family friendly run – or walk for those who prefer a more leisurely pace – that is held to raise money for the YMCA’s annual campaign. The campaign helps the YMCA continue their community outreach and volunteerism, ranging from financial assistance and scholarships to those in need to athletic opportunities and more.
In addition to the 5K race – for prizes will be given! – there is also a Kids Fun Run. Awards will be given to the top three female and male finishers per age group.
