Blue Ridge of Georgetown in South Carolina has been cited for placing residents in immediate jeopardy after a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) verbally abused a resident while providing care.

According to the report, the resident immediately created a scene, cursing at the CNA and causing the CNA to leave the room. The CNA allegedly had threatened to put a bag over the resident’s head and strangle them, but may not have expected to encounter a resident who was unafraid to draw attention.

The CNA claimed the resident had started cursing loudly unprompted and that the CNA chose to leave and allow another CNA to care for the resident.

In an interview with the surveyor who conducted this report, the resident’s roommate was able to confirm the resident’s version of the story. Unfortunately, many other cases of nursing home abuse involve residents who do not speak up or make it difficult for a staff member to take advantage of them.

For-profit nursing homes continually prioritize profits over patient care, and this often leads to overworked and underpaid staff. In this case, the CNA was accused by a resident, and the accusation was supported by another resident. However, cases of abuse and neglect are historically underreported. Residents may have trouble recounting an incident or fear the backlash from nursing home staff if their claim is not believed.

Thankfully, this resident was able to speak up, and the facility thoroughly investigated the issue. The CNA was eventually fired. This is not true with all cases of verbal abuse, as residents are extremely vulnerable and dependent on nursing home staff to do the right thing.
