The town originally developed in the 1850s from a railroad intersection called Five Points that connected Laurens and Newberry. For many years it was known by that name. Later it was named for Henry Clinton, a respected local attorney from Laurens.

Clinton was first inhabited by the Cherokee Indians and has a long and interesting history that dates back to the arrival of Scottish and Irish immigrants from the north in the mid-19th century. The settlers who inhabited the area played an active part in the Revolutionary War battle at Musgrove Mill in 1978. When outnumbered, the Patriots were able to defeat the Loyalists in an epic battle that is still remembered and re-enacted to this day.
