What Are the Dangers Associated with Roundup?
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) conducted studies that found a possible link between glyphosate—the primary ingredient in Roundup—and certain types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In March 2015, the IARC classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
Roundup has come under increased scrutiny and further investigation due to the potential cancer links. Because of those links and previous jury decisions, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Roundup’s manufacturer Monsanto and its parent company Bayer, with more being filed every month throughout the U.S.
Roundup’s Manufacturer Has Already Paid Huge Settlements
Roundup and its manufacturer Bayer have been in the news frequently during the past several years due to jury verdicts and settlements concerning its link to cancer:
- In August 2018, a former school groundskeeper was awarded $289 million after a San Francisco jury ruled his routine use of Roundup as part of his job duties contributed to his terminal cancer diagnosis.
- In March 2019, a California federal jury ruled that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in a 70-year-old man’s diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Because the case was tried in a federal court, it was considered a “bellwether trial” and opened the door for additional claims.
- In May 2019, an Alameda County jury in California awarded a couple more than $2 billion after both the husband and wife developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma from using Roundup.
- In June 2020, Bayer agreed to pay $10.9 billion to settle nearly 100,000 lawsuits alleging the product caused cancer.
- In June 2023, Bayer paid almost $7 million to settle the New York attorney general’s claims that it misled state residents that Roundup is a safe product.
Despite these and more jury verdicts against Bayer, Roundup is still on store shelves. That means countless people are still being exposed to glyphosate on a frequent or daily basis and unknowingly increasing their risk of developing cancers such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
